    First Focus: First Focus published a summary of how proposed amendments to the U.S. Senate’s Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (SB744) may positively and negatively affect children and families. Positive amendments include removing the five-year waiting period for CHIP, Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for children, pregnant women, and lawfully present individuals. Negative amendments include a new five-year waiting period for tax credits and cost-sharing subsidies under the ACA.

  • First Focus Released a Report Providing a Snapshot of the State of Children in the United States

    First Focus: First Focus and Save the Children released a report that provides a snapshot of the state of children in the U.S. The report assigned national grades in five key domains of a child’s life, including Health and Safety, which received a C+. In addition, First Focus recognized 100 Members of Congress for their efforts to protect, improve, and support policies that advance the well-being of children during the 112th Congress (2011-2012).

    First Focus submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) on the Interim Final Provisions of the Exchange and Medicaid rules released on March 23 and March 27, 2012. The comments include recommendations on: (1) streamlining and eliminating duplicative eligibility determinations; (2) requiring timely eligibility determinations; (3) improving transparency; (4) extending performance standards; and (5) promoting the use of presumptive eligibility.
