National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP)

The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) is an independent academy of state health policymakers working together to identify emerging issues, develop policy solutions, and promote excellence in state health policy and practice. NASHP is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for constructive, nonpartisan work across branches and agencies of state government on critical health issues facing states. With support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, NASHP has established Children in the Vanguard, a learning network of 10 states’ Medicaid and CHIP officials committed to maintaining focus on children’s coverage in the context of health care reform. NASHP’s work also includes supporting State Refor(u)m, a website where state officials and stakeholders collaborate and share information, resources and their experiences around health reform implementation.   • NASHP Publishes State-by-State Comparison of Governors’ Health Policies

    NASHP: The National Academy for State Health Policy published a summary of 44 governors’ health policies, as outlined in State of the State or inaugural addresses. The summary notes that a majority of the governors addressed health in their speeches, focusing mostly on Medicaid and behavioral health. The summary also provides a state-by-state matrix across six topics: culture of health, costs, Medicaid, Medicaid expansion, exchanges, and behavioral health.

  • NASHP to Host 2015 Open Enrollment Period Webinar

    NASHP: On December 17th, The National Academy for State Health Policy will host a webinar on early experiences of states during the 2015 Open Enrollment Period. The webinar will be moderated by Jennifer Sullivan of Enroll America and will highlight states’ strategies and challenges and feature panelists from Idaho and Oklahoma.   • NASHP and CCF To Host CHIP Webinar

    NASHP & CCF: On May 7, 2014, the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) will host a webinar on CHIP in advance of a forthcoming report co-authored by NASHP and the Georgetown Center for Children and Families. The webinar will highlight the report’s findings on separate CHIP programs’ benefits, limitations, premiums, and cost sharing provisions, to inform policymakers about CHIP’s role in the context of ACA implementation.  Webinar registration is now available.
  • NASHP Releases Issue Brief on Early Look at States’ Experiences During Open Enrollment

    NASHP:  The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) published an issue brief about states’  experiences during the first few months of the open enrollment period for health insurance marketplaces. The brief describes states’ challenges and solutions for implementing enrollment systems, including strategies for: consumer education and assistance; streamlined application and enrollment processes; and the “no wrong door” approach that provided a boost to Medicaid enrollment during the open enrollment period.   

  • NASHP To Host Webinar Highlighting Medicaid Expansion Strategies in AZ, AK and NY

    NASHP: The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) will host a webinar about Medicaid expansion on January 27, 2014.  The webinar will feature speakers from Arizona, Arkansas, and New York, and highlight each state’s strategy to expand Medicaid to its newly eligible population.  Registration is available now.

    NASHP: In October the National Academy of State Health Policy (NASHP) held its 26th Annual State Health Policy Conference in Seattle, Washington. The three day conference focused on how the ACA is changing health care in the United States and affecting states’ health care systems.   • NASHP Publishes Blog Post on the Benefits of the Exchange and Medicaid Expansion

    NASHP: Alan Weil, Executive Director of the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), published a blog post focusing on how the implementation of the ACA is “providing the nation with variation along many dimensions.” The article discusses how the implementation of the varying forms of Marketplaces and Medicaid Expansion will allow the states to serve as “laboratories”, offering insight into how they will affect access, cost, and health outcomes.

    NASHP: The National Academy of State Health Policy (NASHP) released a draft agenda for its 26th Annual State Health Policy ConferenceWhat’s Brewing in State Health Policy – to be held on October 9-11, 2013.     The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) announced a webinar through State Refor(u)m, focusing on how states can prepare for the Medicaid expansion under the ACA. The webinar will be moderated by Susan Shwartz, Program Director of NASHP and feature perspectives from three state officials: (1) Nathan Johnson, Medicaid Policy Manager, Washington; (2) Elena Nicolella, Medicaid Director, Rhode Island; and (3) Julie Weinberg, Medical Assistance Director, New Mexico. The state officials will address questions that include "How will Medicaid integrate with the insurance exchange?" and "What are strategies to involve stakeholders in this process?" The webinar will be held on June 20th from 2:30-4:00pm ET and registration is available here.
