National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP)

The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) is an independent academy of state health policymakers working together to identify emerging issues, develop policy solutions, and promote excellence in state health policy and practice. NASHP is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for constructive, nonpartisan work across branches and agencies of state government on critical health issues facing states. With support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, NASHP has established Children in the Vanguard, a learning network of 10 states’ Medicaid and CHIP officials committed to maintaining focus on children’s coverage in the context of health care reform. NASHP’s work also includes supporting State Refor(u)m, a website where state officials and stakeholders collaborate and share information, resources and their experiences around health reform implementation.   • NASHP Updates Marketplace Renewal Strategies Chart

    NASHP: The National Academy for State Health Policy updated its marketplace renewal strategies chart. The chart includes a breakdown of each state’s processes for Marketplace renewals including whether the Marketplace will auto-renew Qualified Health Plans, the approach to tax subsidy redeterminations are, and consumer communications to assist with renewal.

  • NASHP To Host Final Webinar on the Medicaid Benefit for Children and Adolescents

    NASHP: The National Academy for State Health Policy will host a webinar on September 9, 2014 about the Medicaid benefit for children and adolescents and how care coordination can bridge the systems and providers serving children and families to provide better care. The webinar is the fifth and final in a series on the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) and will feature speakers from CMS, North Carolina, and Oregon.   • NASHP To Host Webinar on Medicaid and Adolescents

    NASHP:  On May 21, 2014, the National Academy for State Health Policy will host a webinar about utilizing Medicaid to engage adolescents and meet their health care needs.  Presenters from CMS, Community Care of North Carolina, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment will discuss implementation strategies and lessons learned.  Registration is available now.

  • NASHP Releases Issue Brief on State-Federal Partnerships for Consumer Assistance

    NASHP: The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) published an issue brief on states that are sharing consumer assistance responsibilities with the Federally facilitated Marketplace (FFM). The brief provides examples of states coordinating with the FFM in three areas: marketing and advertising; navigators and in-person assisters; and eligibility determination appeals.

  • NASHP Held 26th Annual State Health Policy Conference

    NASHP: In October the National Academy of State Health Policy (NASHP) held its 26th Annual State Health Policy Conference in Seattle, Washington. The three day conference focused on how the ACA is changing health care in the United States and affecting states’ health care systems.   • NASHP Publishes Blog Post on the Benefits of the Exchange and Medicaid Expansion

    NASHP: Alan Weil, Executive Director of the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), published a blog post focusing on how the implementation of the ACA is “providing the nation with variation along many dimensions.” The article discusses how the implementation of the varying forms of Marketplaces and Medicaid Expansion will allow the states to serve as “laboratories”, offering insight into how they will affect access, cost, and health outcomes.

  • NASHP Announced Webinar on Medicaid Expansion

    The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) announced a webinar through State Refor(u)m, focusing on how states can prepare for the Medicaid expansion under the ACA. The webinar will be moderated by Susan Shwartz, Program Director of NASHP and feature perspectives from three state officials: (1) Nathan Johnson, Medicaid Policy Manager, Washington; (2) Elena Nicolella, Medicaid Director, Rhode Island; and (3) Julie Weinberg, Medical Assistance Director, New Mexico. The state officials will address questions that include "How will Medicaid integrate with the insurance exchange?" and "What are strategies to involve stakeholders in this process?" The webinar will be held on June 20th from 2:30-4:00pm ET and registration is available here.
  • NASHP Call Showcased ACA Benefits to California S-CHIP Children

    On February 24, 2012 NASHP will host a Children in the Vanguard call to showcase a recent Urban Institute report, commissioned by The 100% Campaign, on where California's S-CHIP kids will be best served under health care reform. The presentation, by representatives of The 100% Campaign, will highlight the results of the research, as well as focus on the methods used and the thinking behind the analysis done in California. In addition to the Children in the Vanguard states, KidsWell grantees and state officials from New York, Mississippi and Texas may also be joining the call.
