Florida CHAIN

Florida CHAIN is a statewide consumer health advocacy organization dedicated to improving the health of all Floridians by promoting access to affordable, quality health care. Florida CHAIN provides resources to build the capacities for and linking consumer, community and service organizations with health care advocacy. In addition, Florida CHAIN provides policy education, collaborative networking, training, and communications and organizing tools to the public, allied partners, media and policy makers.   • NAM & Florida Advocates CHAIN Published Article and Held a Press Conference on State's Five Year Waiting Period

    NAM & FL: New America Media and Florida CHAIN collaborated to publish an article on Florida’s requirement that lawful immigrants receive Medicaid and CHIP coverage after they have met the five year residence requirement. According to the article, this provision impacts 20,000 to 40,000 children in the state.  KidsWell Florida also held a press conference at the Capitol on April 10th to support legislation that was introduced to remove the five year waiting period (HB 4023/SB704) and extends regulations for presumptive eligibility determinations for Florida KidsCare (HB689/SB548).
  • Florida CHAIN Released Resources on Healthy Florida Alternative Expansion Plan

    FL: Florida CHAIN released resources outlining the Florida Legislature’s proposal that would create Healthy Florida as an alternative coverage plan for the new Medicaid expansion population. The resources include a Q&A and a breakdown of newly eligible adults under the proposed plan.
  • Florida Advocates Continue to Fight for Expansion

    FL: KidsWell Florida partners have continue advocating to the state legislature to expand Medicaid by developing an FAQ for legislators, testifying to the Senate Select Committee on the ACA, and holding a press event on March 14th and a Twitter Town Hall on March 12th to mobilize supporters. Their testimony included presentations from Joan Alker of the Georgetown Center for Children and Families and Greg Mellowe of the Florida Center for Fiscal and Economic Policy. The advocates’ efforts continue to be picked up by various media sources, including the New York Times, Tampa Bay Times and The Florida Current. Florida CHAIN also developed Medicaid Expansion materials (here, here and here) and sample Twitter and Facebook posts for individuals to use.
  • Florida CHAIN Making Sense out of Moving Medicaid Patients into Managed Care Organizations

    FL: Florida CHAIN issued a press release announcing that Florida received conditional approval to transition all Medicaid beneficiaries into managed care. The press released noted that although the state and CMS is moving in the right direction, there is still concern as to whether the wavier will include the needed consumer protections and ensure access to care.

    FL: Florida CHAIN and Progress Florida were featured in the Saint Peters Blog and Florida Current Staff Report about their new website designed to inform Floridians about how they can benefit from the ACA, including the Medicaid expansion and the Exchange.

  • Florida CHAIN Brought A Personal Story to the Conversation on Medicaid Expansion's Potential Costs, Benefits, and Impact in Florida

    Through the efforts of Florida CHAIN, Arie Strobel, an uninsured widow in the state, and her daughter presented their story to a legislative committee on how they would benefit from the Medicaid expansion. Her story was highlighted in The News Service of Florida, Health News Florida, The Palm Beach Post, and a local radio station. Florida CHAIN also organized various other state residents to present their stories on expanding Medicaid to the Florida Legislature and highlighted their presentations on Facebook. In addition, Florida CHAIN circulated a petition supporting an expansion of Medicaid as the Legislature begins to discuss the issue.

  • Florida CHAIN Released Fact Sheet on State Based Exchanges and Submitted Recommendations to HHS on Partnership and Federally-Facilitated Exchange Guidance

    FL: Florida CHAIN released a fact sheet highlighting features, implementation options and deadlines for implementation of a State-based Exchange in Florida. In addition, Florida CHAIN and the Florida Center for Fiscal and Economic Policy, in collaboration with various other organizations, submitted recommendations to HHS on Partnership and Federally-facilitated Exchange guidance.
  • Florida CHAIN Launched a New Website and Mobile Campaign that Sends Text Message Updates on Health Care

    FL: Florida CHAIN launched a new websitewww.floridachain.org - providing a more user-friendly atmosphere to access videos, articles, blogs, fact sheets and policy briefs. In addition, Florida CHAIN released a mobile alert campaign that would send 1-2 text messages a month to members on health care news in the state.

    FL: Florida KidsWell Grantees, in collaboration with the Georgetown Health Policy Institute, held a webinar to launch a report on the implications of the ACA’s Supreme Court decision on Florida’s Medicaid Program. The report was highlighted in a guest column in the Tampa Bay Times and the Georgetown Center for Children and Families Say Ahhh! Blog.
  • Florida CHAIN Issued a Letter to HHS with Recommendations to Ensure Consumer Input and Needs are a Priority in State Exchange Implementation
